Mobile betting proposal falls in NYC

Despite having obtained an extension in the New York legislature, experts close to the government would be in a position to ensure that the law would not get approved. Those who were supporting this project that licensed sports betting from mobiles, could have lost all hope that it was possible in this 2019 by considering it “a dead project”.

During the last weeks of June, the legislators of the senate of the Big Apple have made the world of mobile sports betting expectant. The first vote passed the bill with 57 votes in favor and only 5 against but this it does not mean that the law will see the light in this 2019 .

The state assembly was to proclaim itself for or against the last Wednesday of June but the final decision had to be extended to Thursday. Without reaching an agreement, the project has been almost in “we will see” what seems to be the desire of the governor of the American state, Mr. Andrew Cuomo, who is the biggest opponent. The main argument used by the president and the speaker of the assembly, Carl Heastie, is that, if approved, the law would be completely unconstitutional .

However, Senator Addabbo and Assemblyman Gary Pretlow argue that this would not be the case because, as they explain, it is not the power of legislators to determine the legality of sports betting. For Addabbo there would be no legal reasons that would not allow implementing mobile sports betting this year . According to a tweet from him on June 19, New York would stop like a broken down car by not determining a legal framework for mobile sports betting while neighboring states - such as New Jersey - collect significant profits by legalizing gambling.

Cuomo vs. Addabbo: a war between Democrats

The governor of the state of New York, Andrew Cuomo - who has been in office since 2011 - is the main opponent of this law, considering it unconstitutional. According to relatives, his position would be that first the state would have to debate a law that conforms to the national constitution of that country before approving it. During the debate, witnesses assure that the president said that he would support the project as long as it is within the established frameworks of the law so that “there are no abuses.” For Cuomo, a mobile sports betting law would not be a priority for the citizens of the state .

First of all, sports betting does not make that much money. In the state of New Jersey, where they exist, they appear everywhere on the damn TV. They have managed to generate about 13 million dollars - which in our state is nothing more than a rounding error. So I don't see the economic benefit. Despite his sayings, Cuomo is not opposed to all bets in New York. He has also stated that he does see the benefits of casinos, and that there are now casinos where sports betting is also available: “ We have sports betting that can be done through a casino and we are trying to support our operators , which, you know, we did primarily upstate as an economic development vehicle. I've never liked casinos, but life is choices. A lot of communities upstate, we have a prison industry or nothing. So casinos, especially the way we did it, are well-paying jobs, they are jobs with mobility, this would help strengthen upstate casinos.“

New York still has a long way to go in this adventure of mobile sports betting. Despite the great opposition of the highest president of the state, he does not close the doors as long as the bill presented conforms to the provisions of the constitution. What may happen in the future is anyone's guess although it is more than likely that 2019 will not be the year this happens .
