Suspicious betting report during Q3 2021
The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) has published its suspicious betting report for the third quarter of 2021. IBIA has detected up to 65 suspected irregular bets on 5 continents. The figure represents a decrease compared to the same quarter the previous year, with the majority of reported cases taking place in Europe. Tennis and football are the sports that concentrate most of the alerts.
In the press release that IBIA published on the occasion of the Spanish edition from its study "An optimal betting market”, the Association, through its executive director Khalid Ali, stressed the importance of the integrity in sport and good practices for the development of a betting market with guarantees in which national regulations play a fundamental role.
In the studio it was pointed out that for the industry the estimated cost of match-fixing per year would reach $25 million . An important sum for online sports betting operators and a problem that can only be solved through effective cooperation between the industry and national authorities.
65 alerts during the third quarter of 2021
The report that was published on October 19 highlights a decrease in alerts for suspicious bets . Although, to tell the truth, the trend is very similar to what was observed during the past year . In the set of detected alerts, it stands out that 60% of them are concentrated in Europe. However, 17 of the 39 alerts reported in Europe were in Russia and Ukraine, a country that also stands out for concentrating up to 12 alerts on table tennis.
Football, tennis and table tennis continue to be the sports that concentrate the vast majority of alerts . Few suspicions have been detected this quarter in electronic sports or esports and it also highlights the low presence of alerts in South America. Khalid Ali, CEO of IBIA, note the following:
“The 65 cases in the third quarter bring the total for the nine months to 167 alerts, 17% less than at the same time in 2020, with 202 alerts. Tennis has been the sport that has given the highest number of alerts during the first three quarters, with 47, followed by football with 46, table tennis with 33, and e-sports with 25 cases. These four sports made up 90% of the alerts reported in the first nine months.”
The list of alerts (65) for the third quarter of 2021 is as follows:
- Tennis: 23 cases
- Football: 18 cases
- Table tennis: 17 cases
- Esports: 2 cases
- Handball, cricket, squash, basketball, futsal: 1 case each

With these results in hand it is obvious that, next to table tennis, tennis has a problem with match-fixing attempts . As already mentioned, Europe concentrates 60% of the alerts (39), followed by Asia with 15% (10) and Africa 12% (8). In the Americas there have been a total of 6 alerts distributed equally in North and South America. Obviously, for the 2 cases detected in e-sports it makes no sense to state their geographical location.
