The data published by the DGOJ and corresponding to the year 2021 cover gambling activities at the state and regional levels, which include both online and face-to-face gambling, as well as State lotteries and betting. The GGR of online gambling remains at a slightly higher figure of 815 million euros, surpassing the GGR provided by private gambling in the autonomous community. The amounts played increase.
The DOGJ had already made public at the end of March the data related to the online game and corresponding to 2021. In this last dossier the Spanish regulatory authority completes the aforementioned report and expands it with all the data of the private and state game, also face-to-face and autonomous area .
Main magnitudes: GGR and amounts played
Among the most interesting magnitudes, the GGR or the net gaming margin stands out, which reflects the real aggregate expenditure of the players , that is, the difference between the amounts played and the prizes won, including bonuses in the case of online gambling.

State lotteries and betting | 4,510.2 |
The amounts played is another of the most important indicators . For the case of the face-to-face game, the reference is the net amount disbursed ( drop ) in casino chips. In the online game you can see the amounts played or bet on each hand ( handle ).

Differences between private online gambling and the field of state betting
The differences between the online and the face-to-face field are important, as well as what the state lotteries and betting contribute. THE GGR and the amounts played include the state and autonomous online sector , although the volume of activity of the latter is, for today, quite limited. The autonomous communities that regulate online channels of autonomous scope are: Basque Country, Castilla La Mancha, Ceuta, La Rioja, Madrid, Murcia and Navarra.

Gambling market | Amounts played | GGR |
---|---|---|
Online gambling (state and autonomous) | 27,437 | 557 |
SELAE | 9,358.8 | 3,443.6 |
ELEVEN | 2,236 | 1,015.3 |
In the lotteries both the SELAE and the ONCE increase their magnitudes significantly thus recovering from the fall that 2020 meant. The SELAE goes from a contribution of 2,605.3 million to the GGR to almost 3.5 while the amounts played also increase considerably, 7,536 had been in 2020. The increase is less significant in the bets of the state body.
As for the online game highlights the difference between the contribution to the GGR and the amounts played that, although they increase, they contribute less than in previous years, which has given rise to speculation especially in relation to betting.
Differences between face-to-face and online private play
Undoubtedly, another of the magnitudes to take into account are the amounts played and the net gaming margin in casinos and in-person betting shops and online operators . The differences here are also significant.

What does follow from these data is the fall of the face-to-face game that fails to recover pre-pandemic levels of COVID-19. When in 2019 the GGR reached 355 million experiencing an abrupt decrease the following year as expected, the figure in 2021 is clearly disappointing. This is something he had already signed up for in the Yearbook of the Game of CeJuego .
For his part, the online game does not come out better. well, it experiences a decrease in year-on-year revenues. The employer of the Jdigital sector he has harshly criticized the government policies that would have led to this stagnation of the sector. A stagnation that, however, is not observed in publicly owned games such as lotteries and state bets.
